Local African Firms in the New Era of Globalization
Outline
The business environment in Africa has changed drastically since 2000. Particularly before the financial crisis in 2008, African firms benefited from an upsurge of commodity prices, preferential access to the OECD markets, increases in foreign direct investment in manufacturing and service sectors, and continued improvement of the investment climate. Meanwhile, the development community has recently recognized industrialization in poor countries as a strategy for poverty reduction and sustained economic growth.
In light of heightened attention to industrialization in poor countries, this project attempts to understand whether those favorable changes and the financial crisis have led to improvement of the structural problems that hinders the growth of African firms. The study will examine the potential of African private sector in leading to economic growth.
