IDE Library

A Call Number is a code that is assigned to a book, a bound periodical, and a statistical material. Call numbers are based on the item’s subject content and tell where the library materials are located in the library. The Call Number is usually found on the spine or the upper left hand corner of items.

The IDE Library uses four different classification systems based on the type and the time when the item is cataloged.

The first line of call numbers represents the region/country or the language of publications. The second line represents the subject of the book. The third line represents the first letter of the title or the author’s last name. Knowing the number(s) for your subject area gives you an idea on where to start browsing the shelves.

Books in Japanese and books in foreign languages cataloged since October 1998 (in the case of annuals, those issued since 1990) are arranged by region in the order of classification number.

Books in Japanese and in Western languages cataloged before October 1998 are arranged in order of classification number.

Books in languages that do not use the English alphabet (such as Chinese, Korean, and other Asian/African languages) are arranged by language in the order of classification number.

"P"(e.g. "P" "Pja" "Par") in the upper part of the label indicates bound journals. They are arranged by language in order of classification number.

These are arranged by the name of the international organization or by the region/country of publication. The method of displaying country name / international organization code (abbreviated) and classification code for statistical materials is different from that of books.
