Institute of Developing Economies, IDE-JETRO The rapid development of regional economic integration, in the EU, Americas and East Asia has roughly paralleled the introduction of the “spatial economics” concept, or the study of how space (physical distance) influences economic behavior. The concept, developed by economists mainly in Japan and the West since the early 1990s, is expected to contribute significantly both to theoretical research and policymaking with respect to globalized, borderless economic activity. In Part 1 of the symposium, three founders of spatial economics, namely, Dr. Paul Krugman (Professor, Princeton University), Dr. Anthony J Venables (Professor LSE) and Dr. Fujita spoke about international regional economics, and medium-term outlook for the EU and East Asia. In Part II, following presentations of East Asian case studies, panel of experts considered the possible directions of East Asia’s regional integration. The panel comprised the abovementioned people and three East Asian economics experts, Dr. Yu Yongding (Director, Institute of World Economics and Politics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences), Dr. Young Han Kim (Associate Professor, Sungkyunkwan University), and Dr. Bhanupong Nidhiprabha (Associate Professor, Thammasat University). IDE-JETRO sincerely hopes that this symposium helps to trigger a wider examination of East Asian economic integration among academics, businesspersons, policymakers and all other interested in globalization and regional integration. We sincerely thank our distinguished speakers and guests for agreeing to participate.
