Ajiken Forum on “Secular States and Religions: The United States, France, and Turkey”

Secularism in principle means the separation of the church and the state. In practice, however, secularism manifests itself as forms of state control of religion, which vary extensively even among democratic regimes. The major reason for such variation lies in the state-religion relationships in the pre-democratic regimes.
